The first World Ruby Forum, held in Bangkok on November 4, drew attention to challenges and opportunities in the ruby trade, as well as Thailand’s potential to become a global gemstone and jewellery trading hub.
The event, organised by the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) or GIT in collaboration with public and private sector representatives, discussed ways to promote rubies and raise awareness about the well-loved gemstone.
According to Thai Minister of Commerce Apiradi Tantraporn, the World Ruby Forum 2017 was the first international event to gather professionals in the global ruby industry. “Its key objective was to promote, support, raise awareness and create accurate understanding about the value and beauty of rubies, also known as the ‘King of Gems’ and one of Thailand’s major products,” she added.
The event helped establish the ruby as Thailand’s most important coloured gemstone export product and promote Thailand's goal to become the world’s gemstone and jewellery trading centre by 2021. “By hosting this important event, the potential of Thailand’s gem and jewellery sector in the global arena will become even more distinctive,” noted Tantraporn.
According to Duangkamol Jiambutr, director of GIT, gemstone experts from all over the world discussed pertinent topics such as raw materials, major ruby mines, marketing and branding, and global standards for gemmological laboratories and certification at the forum.
The topics included “Defining a Framework for Corporate Social Responsibility in the Colored Gemstone Sector” by Gaetano Cavalieri, president of World Jewellery Confederation or CIBJO; “Thailand’s Colored Stones and The Road to be Brilliant” by Jiambutr; and “Seeing Red: A Passionate Guide to Ruby” by Richard Hughes, co-founder of Lotus Gemology.
A fashion show as also held at the sidelines of the event featuring ruby jewellery pieces from the World’s Most Beautiful Ruby Contest.
